Lymphatic Care Beyond
Lymphedema: How MLD Supports Your Whole Body

For decades, lymphatic therapy was primarily associated with lymphedema — a condition of chronic swelling typically following cancer treatment. While our certified clinicians are experts in lymphedema management, the science of lymphatic care has expanded dramatically.

The lymphatic system is your body's primary fluid-drainage and immune network. When lymph flow is impaired — whether from surgery, pregnancy, inflammation, lifestyle, or systemic conditions — the effects ripple throughout the body: swelling, heaviness, fatigue, pain, and compromised immune function.

At Thera, we offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and advanced lymphatic care protocols to a broad range of individuals, helping restore flow, reduce swelling, and support whole-body wellness — regardless of whether you have a formal lymphedema diagnosis.

This page is your guide to all the ways lymphatic care can help you — and how our Midtown Manhattan clinic serves NYC patients across every stage of recovery and wellness. Learn how our sessions work →

Who Benefits from Lymphatic Drainage Treat

Lymphatic therapy supports a wide spectrum of conditions and life stages. Explore how specialized lymphatic care can benefit you.

Postpartum Lymphatic Drainage & C-Section Recovery

Pregnancy and childbirth — especially C-sections — create significant fluid shifts in the body. Postpartum lymphatic drainage helps reduce puffiness, address abdominal swelling, support diastasis recti recovery, and restore lymphatic balance disrupted during pregnancy.

Lymphatic Wellness Sessions: Immune & Detox Support

You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from lymphatic care. Many healthy individuals seek MLD to support immune function, reduce puffiness, ease chronic fatigue, improve skin quality, and maintain overall vitality. Think of it as proactive maintenance for your body's drainage system.

Lipedema Treatment in NYC: MLD & Conservative Management

Lipedema is a chronic condition causing disproportionate fat accumulation in the legs and arms, often mistaken for obesity. MLD is a cornerstone of conservative lipedema management — reducing pain, heaviness, and inflammation while improving quality of life. Our therapists provide compassionate, evidence-based care.

Chronic Edema & Inflammation: Lymphatic Therapy for Relief

Conditions like autoimmune disorders, chronic venous insufficiency, and recurrent peripheral edema often have a lymphatic component. Targeted MLD reduces inflammatory load, promotes fluid clearance, and can meaningfully decrease pain and discomfort associated with chronic swelling.

Cancer-Related Lymphatic Care & Lymphedema Risk Reduction

Lymph node removal and radiation therapy disrupt normal lymphatic drainage, increasing risk for lymphedema. Our CLT-certified therapists — trained in oncology rehabilitation — provide risk-reduction education, early-stage intervention, and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), always coordinated with your oncology team.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle hands-on technique developed to stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the body. Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes specifically mapped to the superficial lymphatic pathways.

When performed by a certified lymphatic therapist, MLD is both therapeutic and deeply restorative — reducing swelling, clearing metabolic waste, calming the nervous system, and supporting immune function.

It's important to note that MLD is a clinical therapy, not a spa treatment. The techniques our therapists use are grounded in specialized, evidence-based training — including Norton School and Klose Training — and our team is active members of the National Lymphedema Network (NLN). This is what separates Thera from spa-based or uncertified practitioners offering "lymphatic massage" in NYC.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Wondering what a lymphatic drainage session actually looks like? Here's how your first visit with a Thera CLT unfolds.

Before You Arrive

You'll complete a short intake form about your health history, surgical timeline, and goals. No special preparation is required — wear comfortable, loose clothing.

During Your Session (60–90 min)

Your therapist will review your history, palpate for fluid patterns, and perform MLD using light, rhythmic, skin-level strokes. Sessions are deeply calming — many patients fall asleep.

After Your Session

You may notice increased urination (normal — your body is processing drained fluid), reduced puffiness, and improved mobility. Your therapist will outline a personalized plan for follow-up care.

Why Choose Thera for Lymphatic Care in NYC

Not all manual lymphatic drainage is created equal. The difference between a relaxing spa treatment and a clinically effective lymphatic session lies in training, certification, and individualized protocols — and that's exactly what we offer.

NYC Lymphatic Care — FAQ

Do I need a lymphedema diagnosis to receive lymphatic care?

No. While we are expert lymphedema specialists, lymphatic therapy benefits many people without a formal lymphedema diagnosis — including post-surgical patients, new mothers, those managing chronic inflammation, and individuals seeking general wellness support. Contact us to discuss your situation →

How soon after surgery can I start lymphatic drainage?

Timing depends on your specific procedure and surgeon's clearance. Many plastic surgeons recommend beginning MLD within the first 1–2 weeks post-operatively. We work closely with your surgical team to determine the optimal start time for your recovery. Learn more about plastic surgery recovery →

Is lymphatic drainage covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Lymphedema-related treatment through physical therapy is often partially covered by insurance. We recommend contacting your insurer directly, and our team can provide necessary documentation to support your claim. Contact our team for documentation support →

How many sessions will I need?

This varies significantly by condition and goals. Post-surgical patients may benefit from 3–6 sessions over a few weeks. Wellness and maintenance clients may choose monthly sessions. Chronic or complex conditions like lymphedema require ongoing, structured care plans. Your therapist will outline a personalized plan at your first visit.

What is the difference between MLD and a regular massage?

MLD is a specialized clinical technique — not a relaxation massage. It uses very light pressure (often no more than the weight of a quarter) and specific directional strokes mapped to the lymphatic anatomy. It is performed only by trained and certified lymphatic therapists to ensure clinical efficacy and safety — and results are very different from a standard Swedish or deep-tissue massage.

Does lymphatic drainage help with chronic inflammation or fluid retention?

Yes. Targeted MLD reduces the body's inflammatory load by promoting fluid clearance and supporting lymphatic circulation. Patients with autoimmune conditions, chronic venous insufficiency, and recurrent peripheral edema often report meaningful improvement in swelling, heaviness, and pain after a course of MLD treatment.
