What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic disorder of adipose (fat) tissue deposition that almost exclusively affects women. It typically involves the legs, hips, and buttocks in a bilateral, largely symmetric distribution that stops abruptly at the ankle. The arms can also be affected. Lipedema fat does not respond to diet or conventional exercise, is often painful or tender to the touch, and bruises easily.

Lipedema is widely underdiagnosed — frequently mistaken for obesity or lymphedema. The distinguishing features are well-recognized by specialists: bilateral symmetric distribution stopping at the ankle, pain and tenderness on palpation, easy bruising, and failure to respond to weight loss. Many patients carry an incorrect diagnosis for years before receiving accurate assessment and appropriate care.

Conservative management focuses on reducing pain, heaviness, and inflammation; improving lymphatic drainage in affected tissue; and maintaining function and quality of life. MLD, compression therapy, and appropriate movement are the cornerstones of evidence-based conservative lipedema care.

Lipolymphedema: In advanced lipedema, abnormal fat tissue eventually impairs lymphatic drainage, producing a secondary lymphedema component. We treat both conditions in an integrated approach. See our lipolymphedema page.

Lipedema Symptoms We Treat

  • Bilateral leg and hip heaviness and fatigue disproportionate to activity level
  • Tenderness and pain in the affected tissue — even with light touch
  • Easy bruising in the lipedema tissue
  • Progressive swelling not responding to elevation or dietary changes
  • Lymphatic component (lipolymphedema) when present
  • Mobility and activity limitations from progressive tissue changes
  • Psychological distress and body image concerns associated with lipedema

Our Treatment Approach

01

Lipedema Assessment & Staging

We assess distribution, tissue character, pain levels, mobility, and functional capacity. Lipedema is staged 1–4 based on tissue texture and distribution. We differentiate lipedema from lipolymphedema and develop a plan addressing both dimensions where present.

02

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

MLD for lipedema reduces the inflammatory load within the affected tissue and addresses any secondary lymphedema component. It is one of the most consistently reported symptom-relieving interventions in lipedema care — reducing pain, heaviness, and pressure.

03

Compression Therapy

Graduated compression is a cornerstone of lipedema management. We advise on appropriate garment types, pressure levels, and wear schedules for your staging and affected regions.

04

Movement & Exercise Guidance

Low-impact movement — swimming, water exercise, walking, cycling — supports lymphatic flow and is encouraged as part of holistic lipedema management. We provide individualized, sustainable guidance appropriate to your capacity.

Lipedema deserves compassionate, expert care. Our certified Midtown Manhattan team is here to help you manage your condition effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have lipedema or just excess weight?

Lipedema has specific distinguishing features: bilateral symmetric distribution stopping at the ankle, tenderness on palpation, easy bruising, and failure to respond to dietary changes. A clinical assessment by a trained therapist or physician experienced with lipedema can help differentiate.

Can MLD cure lipedema?

No — lipedema is chronic and MLD does not remove lipedema fat tissue. However, MLD significantly reduces symptoms including pain, heaviness, and inflammatory swelling, and is an important component of ongoing management.
