Joint replacement surgery — whether knee, hip, or shoulder — involves extensive tissue manipulation, bone work, and implant placement within a richly vascularized anatomical region. The resulting surgical trauma triggers a significant inflammatory response, and the lymphatic vessels responsible for clearing the resulting fluid accumulation are themselves disrupted during the procedure. Post-operative swelling after joint replacement is therefore often pronounced, and can persist well beyond what patients and their care teams expect.
Persistent joint swelling after replacement surgery is not merely cosmetic — it delays the return of normal joint movement, increases pain and stiffness, and slows participation in the physiotherapy that is essential to a successful outcome. Manual Lymphatic Drainage, performed by a certified therapist, accelerates fluid clearance, reduces inflammatory load, and directly supports the functional rehabilitation process.
Coordination with your orthopedic team: We communicate with your orthopedic surgeon and physiotherapy team to ensure MLD is integrated appropriately within your overall joint replacement rehabilitation plan. Lymphatic drainage complements — and does not replace — your standard post-operative physiotherapy.
Post-Joint-Replacement Concerns We Treat
- Swelling in the joint and surrounding soft tissue persisting beyond the expected acute phase
- Tightness and stiffness limiting joint flexion and extension
- Fluid migration — to the calf and ankle after knee replacement; thigh after hip replacement
- Bruising slow to resolve around the surgical site
- Discomfort and heaviness with weight-bearing or movement
- Reduced motivation to participate in physiotherapy due to pain and swelling
Our Treatment Approach
Assessment & Surgical Review
We review your specific joint replacement procedure, current swelling distribution, rehabilitation program, and surgeon's guidelines before beginning. MLD technique and positioning are adapted to your joint's healing stage and the restrictions associated with your procedure.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Gentle MLD is applied to clear regional lymph node basins and redirect fluid away from the swollen joint. For knee replacements, this includes inguinal and popliteal node work; for hip replacements, inguinal and lumbar pathways; for shoulder, axillary drainage. Sessions are typically 45–60 minutes.
Supporting Rehabilitation
By reducing swelling and improving tissue comfort, MLD directly supports your ability to engage fully with physiotherapy exercises — which are the primary driver of joint function recovery. We communicate with your PT team and align session timing to maximize the benefit of both.
Compression & Home Guidance
Where appropriate, we advise on compression stocking or bandaging and provide simple self-drainage techniques appropriate to the affected joint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can MLD be done alongside my regular physiotherapy?
Yes, and this is the ideal approach. MLD is most valuable when integrated with — not instead of — your physiotherapy program. We recommend scheduling MLD sessions on the same days as or shortly before physiotherapy to maximize the benefit of reduced swelling on your ability to exercise and move the joint.
How soon after joint replacement can I start MLD?
Timing depends on your specific procedure and surgeon's clearance, but most patients can begin gentle MLD within 1–3 weeks post-operatively. We always confirm appropriate timing with your orthopedic team before beginning treatment.
