The Case for Ongoing Lymphatic Care

The lymphatic system, like all physiological systems, benefits from regular support — particularly in modern lifestyles characterized by prolonged sitting, reduced physical activity, chronic stress, and environmental burdens that increase the metabolic load the lymphatic system must manage. For most healthy individuals, the lymphatic system compensates adequately for these demands most of the time. But adequate is not optimal — and for many people, the difference between a well-supported and a sluggish lymphatic system is the difference between consistent energy, clear skin, and a robust immune response versus recurring puffiness, fatigue, and reduced resilience.

Maintenance lymphatic care is the practice of supporting your lymphatic system proactively — not waiting for symptoms or a clinical diagnosis to arise, but investing regularly in the function of a system that underpins your immune health, fluid balance, and cellular vitality. It is analogous to regular dental hygiene: not because a problem is present, but because consistent care prevents problems from developing and supports long-term health.

For patients who have completed intensive lymphedema treatment, maintenance MLD is particularly important: it sustains the gains achieved during the intensive phase, prevents relapse, and allows early detection of any worsening before it becomes established. For healthy individuals, it is a proactive investment in long-term wellbeing.

Maintenance Sessions Are Well-Suited For You If…

Lymphedema Graduates

You have completed intensive CDT

You have achieved your treatment goals through intensive lymphedema therapy and want to sustain those results with regular maintenance MLD alongside your home program.

At-Risk Individuals

You have had lymph node surgery or radiation

You are not experiencing active lymphedema but carry a lifetime risk from cancer treatment. Regular monitoring and wellness MLD support early detection and prevention.

Wellness Seekers

You want proactive lymphatic health support

No diagnosis, no specific concern — you simply want consistent, professional support for a system that underpins your immune function, fluid balance, and overall vitality.

High-Demand Lifestyles

Frequent travelers, high-stress professionals, athletes

Your lifestyle creates demands on your lymphatic system that benefit from regular professional support — managing the fluid shifts of long-haul travel, the inflammatory burden of intense training, or the autonomic effects of chronic stress.

Aging Adults

Supporting lymphatic function through the decades

Lymphatic vessel contractility and overall lymphatic efficiency decline with age. Regular maintenance MLD supports the system as it naturally changes, reducing the accumulation that contributes to age-related puffiness, joint heaviness, and immune vulnerability.

What to Expect From Your Visit

01

Maintenance Assessment

Each maintenance session begins with a brief review of how you have been feeling since your last visit, any changes in your health status, symptoms, or lifestyle, and any specific areas to prioritize in today's session. For lymphedema maintenance clients, we include limb measurements to track your status over time.

02

Full-Body or Targeted MLD

Depending on your goals and presentation, sessions may be full-body wellness MLD or targeted to specific regions — the affected limb for lymphedema maintenance clients, the cervical and cranial pathways for immune and energy support, or the whole body for general wellness.

03

Home Program Review

We review your self-care practices — home drainage, compression garment use, skin care, activity — and refine the program as your needs evolve. Maintenance sessions are an opportunity to troubleshoot, adjust, and optimize your between-session routine.

04

Scheduling & Long-Term Planning

We work with you to establish an ongoing maintenance schedule that fits your lifestyle, goals, and response to treatment — typically monthly, but adapted to seasonal demands, travel schedules, and changes in your health status over time.

Consistent maintenance is the foundation of long-term lymphatic health. Our Midtown Manhattan team is here to support yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should maintenance MLD sessions be scheduled?

For most wellness clients, monthly sessions provide a good balance of consistent lymphatic support and practicality. For lymphedema maintenance clients, frequency depends on your stability and home program — some patients do very well with monthly sessions, others prefer every 6–8 weeks once they are stable. We adjust based on your response and any changes in your status.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds for maintenance lymphatic sessions?

This depends on your specific plan. Lymphedema-related maintenance therapy that is medically prescribed is often HSA/FSA eligible. General wellness sessions may not be. We recommend checking with your plan administrator and are happy to provide documentation where appropriate.

What happens if I need to go back to more intensive treatment from maintenance?

If your assessment or your own monitoring indicates worsening lymphatic status, we can transition from maintenance back to more frequent, active treatment at any time. The ability to detect changes early — before they become established — is one of the key benefits of regular maintenance monitoring sessions.
