Pregnancy requires a substantial increase in total body fluid volume — blood volume increases by up to 50% and interstitial fluid accumulation is significant throughout the body. After birth, the body must reabsorb and eliminate this excess fluid volume over several weeks, and the process frequently produces pronounced swelling in the face, hands, legs, feet, and ankles.
This process is further complicated by the physical demands of labor itself: the effort of childbirth causes local tissue swelling, epidural anesthesia can impair lower extremity circulation, and the hormonal shifts of the early postpartum period alter fluid regulation. For mothers who have had a C-section, surgical lymphatic disruption in the lower abdomen adds an additional fluid management challenge. MLD actively supports the clearance mechanisms that are struggling to manage this increased demand.
Safe for new mothers: Postpartum MLD uses very gentle pressure and is specifically adapted for the postpartum body. Our therapists are trained in postpartum protocols and provide care that fits the demands of early motherhood.

Our Treatment Approach
Postpartum Assessment
We assess the distribution and character of your swelling, review your birth type and any complications, and confirm with your obstetric provider that MLD is appropriate at your current healing stage. Sessions are adapted to your energy level and the demands of caring for a newborn.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Gentle, rhythmic MLD is applied to the areas of greatest swelling, following the anatomical lymphatic pathways appropriate to your postpartum presentation. Sessions are typically 45–60 minutes. We adapt positioning to accommodate breastfeeding comfort, incision healing, and perineal sensitivity.
Breast Lymphatic Support
For mothers experiencing breast engorgement, gentle breast lymphatic drainage can support milk flow and reduce the discomfort of early-stage engorgement. We coordinate with your lactation support team when relevant.
Self-Care Education
We teach simple self-drainage techniques, provide guidance on hydration, movement, and compression where appropriate, and discuss the expected timeline for postpartum fluid resolution.
Postpartum recovery deserves dedicated lymphatic support. Our certified Midtown Manhattan team welcomes new mothers at every stage of recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
How soon after birth can I start postpartum MLD?
For vaginal births, gentle MLD can typically begin within the first week postpartum when you are comfortable and cleared by your provider. After C-section, we typically begin 1–2 weeks post-surgery once the incision is healing appropriately. We confirm timing with your obstetric provider before starting treatment.
Will MLD affect my milk supply?
Gentle postpartum MLD supports lymphatic flow in the breast and surrounding tissue, which can support rather than diminish milk production. If you have concerns about breastfeeding and MLD, we are happy to discuss these at your consultation and coordinate with your lactation consultant.
