Lymphedema is a chronic condition arising from structural damage or insufficiency of the lymphatic system, resulting in the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in interstitial tissue. It develops when the lymphatic system's transport capacity is overwhelmed — either because lymphatic vessels or nodes have been removed, damaged, or are congenitally insufficient.
Lymphedema is classified as primary (congenital) or secondary (caused by damage from cancer surgery, radiation, infection, or trauma). It is staged by the International Society of Lymphology from Stage 0 (subclinical, no visible swelling) through Stage 3 (severe, irreversible tissue changes). Lymphedema is a lifelong condition but is highly manageable with appropriate treatment and self-management. Our practice offers expert lymphedema treatment across all stages and body regions.
All stages and regions treated: We evaluate and treat lymphedema of the arm, leg, breast, trunk, genitalia, face, and neck. Each region requires specific MLD pathways and compression strategies.
Classification & What Each Stage Means
No visible swelling yet — lymphatic transport is already impaired
Subtle heaviness or skin changes present. Earliest and most important stage to identify and address proactively.
Early pitting swelling that reduces with elevation
Tissue remains soft and pliable. Most responsive stage for treatment. Goal is to prevent progression to Stage 2.
Swelling no longer fully reduces with elevation
Fibrotic changes begin in the tissue. Requires consistent CDT and ongoing maintenance management.
Significant permanent swelling with skin changes
Advanced tissue changes including papillomatosis. Requires intensive, long-term specialist management.
Our Treatment Approach
Comprehensive Lymphedema Evaluation
Limb or regional volume measurements, skin and tissue assessment, palpation, range of motion evaluation, and detailed review of your medical, surgical, and radiation history. ISL staging confirmed and individualized treatment plan developed.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Certified MLD redirects lymph fluid from congested regions to functioning lymph node basins via alternative drainage pathways. Drainage routes vary by body region and are specific to your lymphedema presentation.
Compression Therapy
Multi-layer bandaging during intensive treatment phases and compression garment fitting for daily management. We measure and recommend garments appropriate to your region, activity level, and lifestyle.
Therapeutic Exercise
Progressive exercise supports lymphatic flow and is safe for people with lymphedema at all stages. Our structured strengthening program is available for appropriate patients.
Self-Management Education
Self-bandaging, home drainage exercises, skin care, infection prevention, garment care, and strategies for managing flare-ups during travel, heat, and illness.
