Skin-Sparing Mastectomy & Its Rehabilitation Needs

Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) removes breast tissue, nipple, and areola while preserving the overlying breast skin envelope — providing the best foundation for immediate reconstruction. The preserved skin flap has specific early healing considerations: it must be protected during rehabilitation, and any compromise in skin flap viability requires immediate surgical attention. Rehabilitation combines mastectomy recovery with reconstruction-specific support, always respecting the healing requirements of the preserved skin.

Part of our complete breast rehabilitation program: All mastectomy patients benefit from our comprehensive program — including lymphedema risk management, radiation fibrosis treatment, and the Strength After Breast Cancer exercise program. See our full program →

Post-SSM Concerns We Treat

  • Arm and shoulder mobility restriction from mastectomy and axillary surgery
  • Preserved skin flap healing — technique and pressure respect skin flap viability in early sessions
  • Reconstruction-specific rehabilitation (implant, expander, or flap) in integrated plan
  • Mastectomy and reconstruction scar management
  • Lymphedema risk monitoring from axillary surgery
  • Tissue expander discomfort and progressive expansion management

Our Treatment Approach

01

Comprehensive Assessment

We evaluate shoulder and arm range of motion, chest wall mobility, scar status, posture, and lymphatic risk factors. Baseline arm measurements are established. We review your surgical details, axillary node status, radiation history, and reconstruction plans.

02

Arm & Shoulder Mobility Restoration

Progressive, guided shoulder and arm mobility exercises beginning as soon as your surgeon clears movement — typically within 1–2 weeks post-operatively, adapted to your surgical constraints and healing stage.

03

Manual Therapy & Scar Management

Scar desensitization, mobilization, and soft tissue treatment at the mastectomy scar and any reconstruction incisions. Myofascial release for chest wall tightness. Cording treatment when present. See scar management services →

04

MLD & Lymphedema Management

Manual Lymphatic Drainage for post-surgical chest wall and arm swelling. Lymphedema risk monitoring throughout treatment, with early intervention if subclinical changes are detected. See our lymphedema program →

05

Strength & Functional Rehabilitation

Progressive upper body strengthening through our Strength After Breast Cancer (ABC) program — rebuilding strength, endurance, and confidence needed to return to daily life and valued activities.

Skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction requires integrated rehabilitation. Our certified team addresses every dimension.

Frequently Asked Questions

My skin-sparing mastectomy included a tissue expander. How does that affect rehabilitation?

Tissue expanders produce specific chest wall tightness and restrict shoulder elevation during the expansion phase. Rehabilitation is adapted to the progressive expansion — providing targeted chest wall stretching and shoulder mobility work accommodating the changing tissue tension.

How is SSM rehabilitation different from standard mastectomy rehabilitation?

The key difference is the preserved skin flap and immediate reconstruction, which both require specific protective considerations in early rehabilitation. The mastectomy component is addressed with the same comprehensive approach.
