Why Plastic Surgery Causes Significant Swelling

Post-operative swelling is one of the most universal and distressing experiences after cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. Every surgical procedure — whether liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast surgery, facelift, or body contouring — triggers an acute inflammatory response in the surrounding tissue. Blood vessels become more permeable, fluid leaks into the interstitial space, and the lymphatic vessels responsible for clearing that fluid are themselves disrupted by the surgical instrumentation.

The result is swelling, puffiness, tightness, and bruising that can significantly delay the visible results of surgery and impair comfort and mobility during recovery. Without targeted intervention, post-surgical edema can persist for weeks to months — particularly in procedures involving large areas of tissue disruption such as abdominoplasty, body lift, and multi-site liposuction.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), performed by a certified lymphatic therapist, is the most effective evidence-based intervention for reducing post-surgical edema. By gently stimulating the superficial lymphatic network, MLD accelerates fluid clearance, reduces inflammatory load, and directly supports faster, more comfortable recovery — allowing surgical results to become visible sooner.

MLD is not massage. Post-surgical edema requires very light, specific, directional strokes mapped to the lymphatic anatomy — not the deep pressure of traditional massage, which can be harmful to healing tissue. Our therapists hold both CCST (Certified Cosmetic Surgery Therapist) and CLT (Certified Lymphatic Therapist) credentials and are trained specifically in post-surgical lymphatic protocols.

Edema Patterns Across Surgical Types

Liposuction & Body Contouring

Multi-zone fluid accumulation

Swelling at and below treated areas, often migrating with gravity. Can persist 2–4 months without MLD. Fibrosis risk increases the longer fluid remains in tissue.

Abdominoplasty & Tummy Tuck

Abdominal flap and seroma risk

Large skin flap elevation disrupts lymphatics across a broad territory. Seroma — fluid pooling beneath the flap — is a key complication that MLD after drain removal helps prevent.

Facial Procedures

Rapid-onset periorbital & cervical edema

Facelift, rhinoplasty, and blepharoplasty produce dense facial swelling that responds extremely well to facial MLD — often visibly reducing within 2–3 sessions.

Our Treatment Approach

01

Surgical Review & Timing Assessment

We review your procedure, surgeon's post-operative instructions, and healing timeline before beginning treatment. MLD technique and pressure are adapted to the specific surgery, tissue fragility, and stage of healing. We coordinate directly with your surgical team when needed.

02

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Gentle, rhythmic MLD strokes are applied in a sequence designed to open proximal lymph node basins first, then guide fluid away from the congested surgical area toward functioning drainage pathways. Sessions typically 45–60 minutes, 2–3 times per week in the acute phase.

03

Compression Guidance

Where appropriate, we advise on compression garment use between sessions to sustain the fluid reduction achieved during MLD. Compression type, pressure, and wear schedule are individualized to your surgery and the areas affected, within your surgeon's garment recommendations.

04

Self-Care & Home Program

We teach simple self-drainage techniques, positioning strategies, and hydration and activity guidelines to support lymphatic flow between appointments — empowering you to actively participate in your own recovery.

Post-surgical swelling responds powerfully to early, skilled MLD. The sooner you start, the faster you see your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after surgery can I start MLD?

Many surgeons recommend beginning MLD within 1–2 weeks post-operatively, once incisions have adequate closure and you have surgical clearance. Some procedures allow even earlier gentle sessions. We always confirm appropriate timing with your surgical team before beginning treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the extent of surgery, the degree of swelling, and how your body responds to treatment. Most patients see meaningful improvement within 3–6 sessions. More extensive procedures — abdominoplasty, body lift, multi-area liposuction — often benefit from a longer course of 8–12 sessions.

Can MLD help prevent seroma after tummy tuck?

Yes. MLD supports the clearance of lymphatic fluid from the space beneath the elevated abdominal flap — the fluid that would otherwise accumulate as a seroma. Many surgeons specifically recommend MLD after drain removal for this reason. While MLD cannot guarantee seroma prevention, it significantly reduces the fluid load and complements the role drains play in early recovery.
