Implantable venous access ports are placed in the infraclavicular region — adjacent to the anterior shoulder and clavipectoral fascia. Port pocket creation and subsequent scar formation can contribute to shoulder stiffness and anterior chest wall tightness. In breast cancer patients who have also had axillary surgery or mastectomy, this can compound existing mobility restrictions. Port removal after treatment similarly requires healing and scar management. While port-related rehabilitation needs are modest compared to mastectomy or reconstruction, they are easily overlooked and make a meaningful difference to shoulder mobility and comfort during the treatment period.
Port-Related Concerns We Treat
- Infraclavicular and anterior chest wall tightness from port pocket scar tissue
- Anterior shoulder stiffness related to the port site
- Port site scar management after removal — desensitization and scar mobilization
- Shoulder movement restriction in patients with concurrent axillary or mastectomy restrictions
- Port access site discomfort and hypersensitivity management
- Lymphatic considerations when port is placed on the axillary surgery side
Our Treatment Approach
Port Site Assessment
We assess the port location, scar status, surrounding soft tissue mobility, and any shoulder movement restriction associated with the port site — in context of your other breast cancer surgeries.
Infraclavicular Scar & Soft Tissue Management
Scar desensitization and mobilization at the port site — both during the period the port is in place (avoiding the port itself) and after removal. Myofascial release of the clavipectoral fascia and anterior chest wall tissue.
Anterior Shoulder Mobility
Gentle anterior shoulder mobility addressing any stiffness related to the port site, integrated with the broader shoulder rehabilitation program for concurrent axillary or mastectomy surgery.
Port Removal Recovery
After port removal, dedicated scar management at the port site closure — the small scar from port removal benefits from early management to prevent the raised, hypersensitive scar that can develop without care.
Port placement and removal rehabilitation is a small but impactful component of comprehensive breast cancer treatment support.

Frequently Asked Questions
My port site is very tender and tight. Is that from the port or from my surgery?
Port-related tightness in the infraclavicular region is common and distinct from mastectomy or axillary restrictions, though the two can compound each other. Assessment distinguishes between port-related tissue changes and those from primary breast surgery.
Should I wait until my port is removed to address port-related tightness?
No — we can address soft tissue and scar changes around the port site while it is still in place, avoiding direct contact with the port itself. Early management prevents progressive fixation of port-related scar tissue.
