Oncoplastic lumpectomy combines breast-conserving cancer surgery with immediate plastic surgery reconstruction techniques — tissue rearrangement, mastopexy, or volume displacement — to remove a larger volume while preserving breast shape. Rehabilitation needs are correspondingly more extensive than standard lumpectomy: the lymphatic disruption and scar management needs of lumpectomy combined with the additional soft tissue rearrangement, incision patterns, and recovery of the oncoplastic component.
Many oncoplastic patients also undergo contralateral symmetrization surgery — a reduction or lift on the non-cancer side — adding a second operative site to the rehabilitation picture.
Post-Oncoplastic Lumpectomy Concerns We Treat
- Breast swelling from both the lumpectomy cavity and tissue rearrangement
- Multi-incision scar management — lumpectomy, lift, reduction, and contralateral incisions
- Breast shape changes during healing — managing swelling-related distortion
- Nipple-areola sensitivity changes from periareolar oncoplastic incisions
- Arm and shoulder mobility from any axillary component
- Radiation tissue changes after mandatory post-lumpectomy radiotherapy
- Lymphedema risk monitoring throughout treatment
Our Treatment Approach
Oncoplastic Assessment
We review the specific technique used, all incision locations, any contralateral surgery, axillary involvement, and planned radiation. A comprehensive plan addresses all surgical sites and the radiation treatment timeline.
Multi-Site MLD & Swelling Management
MLD for breast swelling from both the lumpectomy cavity and tissue rearrangement. Both breasts addressed in a coordinated drainage sequence when contralateral surgery was performed.
Multi-Incision Scar Management
Systematic scar care across all incision sites — prioritized by healing status and scar type. Desensitization, silicone guidance, and manual mobilization coordinated across all sites.
Radiation Fibrosis Management
Progressive breast and chest wall tissue management during and after radiation, preserving tissue pliability and protecting the oncoplastic result over time.
Oncoplastic lumpectomy combines breast cancer and breast reconstruction rehabilitation. Our team addresses both.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is oncoplastic lumpectomy recovery more complex than standard lumpectomy?
Yes — oncoplastic procedures involve more extensive tissue rearrangement, additional incision patterns, and often contralateral symmetrization surgery. The rehabilitation needs are correspondingly greater, addressed in full at your initial evaluation.
I'm having the opposite breast reduced for symmetry. Do you address both sides?
Yes. Contralateral symmetrization adds a second operative site with its own swelling, scar, and tissue management needs. Both sides are incorporated into a coordinated rehabilitation plan.
