Liposuction — whether traditional tumescent, VASER, power-assisted, or laser-assisted — creates significant trauma to the treated tissue. Cannula passes rupture lymphatic capillaries, disrupt the fibrous septae that give skin its structure, and trigger a robust inflammatory response. The result is swelling, bruising, firmness, and fluid accumulation that, without skilled rehabilitation, can persist for months and lead to fibrosis, contour irregularities, and hardened lumps beneath the skin.
Post-liposuction rehabilitation is not simply about comfort — it directly protects your cosmetic result. The fibrosis that can develop in inadequately managed post-liposuction tissue produces the uneven, lumpy texture that patients and surgeons work hard to avoid. Early, consistent intervention through Manual Lymphatic Drainage, soft tissue mobilization, and compression management is the most effective strategy for achieving the smooth, even outcome your procedure was designed to produce.
Timing matters. Most surgeons recommend beginning MLD within 1–2 weeks post-operatively. The earlier skilled rehabilitation begins, the more effectively fibrosis and fluid accumulation can be prevented. We confirm appropriate timing with your surgeon before starting treatment.
Post-Liposuction Concerns We Treat
- Post-operative swelling and fluid accumulation in treated areas
- Prevention of fibrosis — hardened, irregular scar tissue beneath the skin
- Existing lumps, firmness, or uneven texture from developing or established fibrosis
- Bruising and discoloration slow to resolve
- Fluid migration to areas below the treatment zone (gravity-dependent edema)
- Compression garment guidance and wear schedule optimization
- Scar tissue at cannula entry points
Our Treatment Approach
Surgical Review & Assessment
We review your procedure details, surgeon's post-operative instructions, and current tissue status. Technique and session depth are adapted to your healing stage — early sessions are lighter and more proximal, progressing to direct treatment of the liposuction zones as healing advances.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
CLT-certified MLD reduces swelling, clears inflammatory mediators, and actively prevents the fibrosis that develops when lymphatic drainage is prolonged. Sessions typically 60 minutes, 2–3 times per week in the acute phase, tapering as swelling resolves.
Fibrosis & Soft Tissue Management
Once healing allows, targeted soft tissue mobilization addresses any developing hardness or irregularity. This is combined with MLD — not a replacement — and is timed to your healing stage in coordination with your surgeon.
Compression & Home Program
Guidance on garment use, self-drainage techniques, positioning, and hydration to optimize results between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many MLD sessions do I need after liposuction?
Most patients benefit from 6–10 sessions, with highest frequency (2–3 per week) in the first 2–4 weeks, tapering as swelling resolves. Multi-area liposuction typically requires a longer course. We assess your response and adjust at each visit.
Can MLD help if I already have lumps or fibrosis from a previous liposuction?
Yes. While established fibrosis is more resistant than early-stage changes, a combination of MLD and targeted soft tissue mobilization can meaningfully soften hardened areas and improve texture. Response is better the earlier treatment begins, but improvement is achievable even months after surgery.
My surgeon didn't mention rehabilitation. Should I still come?
Many patients are not specifically referred for rehabilitation despite clear evidence of benefit. You do not need a referral to begin care in New York State. We coordinate with your surgeon throughout your treatment.
