Restricted movement after plastic surgery is an extremely common — and often underaddressed — aspect of post-operative recovery. While most patients expect swelling and bruising, many are less prepared for the meaningful reduction in mobility that can accompany procedures involving the chest wall, axilla, abdomen, or large areas of skin resection. Understanding the mechanisms producing this restriction is important for addressing it effectively.
Post-surgical mobility restriction arises from multiple overlapping sources: the acute tissue swelling that increases local pressure and reduces tissue glide; protective guarding — the reflexive reduction in movement to protect healing tissue; scar tissue formation that progressively tightens as it matures; fibrosis in the underlying soft tissue; and, over time, deconditioning from sustained activity reduction during recovery. Each of these mechanisms requires a targeted approach, and effective mobility rehabilitation addresses them in a logical, staged sequence.
Movement Limitations by Procedure and Region
After arm lift, axillary surgery, breast procedures
Reduced shoulder abduction and flexion from axillary scar tension and cording. Inner arm restrictions after brachioplasty. Pectoral tightness after submuscular breast implants.
After abdominoplasty, body lift, flank liposuction
Reduced trunk flexion and extension from abdominal scar tension after tummy tuck. Hip flexion restriction from groin scars after body lift. Core reconnection after abdominal wall tightening.
After thigh lift, liposuction of thighs, body lift
Hip adduction and flexion restrictions from inner thigh and groin scar tension after thigh lift. Movement limitation from extensive thigh liposuction and fibrosis.
Our Treatment Approach
Functional Mobility Assessment
We assess range of motion at all affected joints, identify the specific mechanisms contributing to restriction (swelling, guarding, scar tension, fibrosis, deconditioning), and establish a baseline against which progress is measured. We review your surgical procedure and the specific tissues affected.
Swelling Reduction & Tissue Preparation
MLD and gentle compression to reduce the fluid component of restriction — swelling-related limitation often responds rapidly, producing quick early gains in mobility and motivating continued rehabilitation.
Scar & Soft Tissue Mobilization
Targeted scar mobilization and myofascial release to address the scar and fibrotic tissue tension contributing to movement restriction. This is the most direct intervention for the tightness and pulling sensation that limits range of motion at the affected region.
Progressive Range of Motion & Strengthening
Graded, progressive mobility exercises building from gentle range of motion to functional strengthening — always within your healing parameters and surgeon's activity guidelines. Home exercise program provided and updated at each visit to maintain gains between sessions.
Mobility restrictions after plastic surgery respond well to dedicated, skilled rehabilitation. Don't accept limited movement as an inevitable part of your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
I had a tummy tuck and cannot stand fully upright. Is this normal and when will it improve?
Difficulty standing fully upright in the first 2–4 weeks after abdominoplasty is expected and normal — the tightening of the abdominal tissue requires gradual accommodation. However, if significant restriction persists beyond 4–6 weeks, or if scar tightness is contributing to a sustained forward posture, targeted rehabilitation can significantly accelerate restoration of full upright stance and trunk extension.
Can physical therapy help me raise my arm fully after arm lift surgery?
Yes. Reduced shoulder elevation after brachioplasty — particularly from the axillary component of the scar — is a common and treatable mobility limitation. Axillary web syndrome (cording) and inner arm scar tension are the two most common contributors. With targeted manual therapy, most patients achieve full or near-full shoulder mobility restoration within 4–8 sessions.
How quickly will my mobility improve with rehabilitation?
Many patients notice meaningful improvement within the first 2–4 sessions, particularly for swelling-related restriction and early scar tension. More established restrictions from mature scar and fibrosis take longer — typically 8–12 sessions for significant gains. We reassess progress at each visit and adjust the plan accordingly.
